Paraffin is a hard crystalline wax that consists of a mixture of straight-chain hydrocarbons (typically C20 to C30), and is characterised by having a melting point that varies between 48 oC and 66 oC. It is obtained from petroleum by dewaxing light lubricating oil fractions (shale oil). When melted, Paraffin yields a low viscosity colourless or translucent oily liquid.
