Stearic Acid is Octadecanoic acid (C18H36O2), a C18 fatty acid obtained by the hydrolysis of fat or hydrogenation of edible vegetable oil fractions. In the USP-NF, Stearic acid is described as a mixture of stearic acid and palmitic acid, the content of stearic acid being not less than 40%. It is supplied as a hard, white or faintly yellow-coloured crystalline solid or powder, with a slight lipid odour.
