Phospholipids are a large group of amphiphilic lipid compounds formed from glycerol or an amino-alcohol backbone which is esterified to a fatty acid group, a phosphate group, and a hydrophilic moiety. They can be anionic, cationic, or neutral in charge. Phospholipids form part of the normal human diet, being found in soybeans, egg yolk and marine animals, from where they are also commercially derived. Pharmaceutical grade phospholipids are available as white powders or as solutions in chloroform or methylene chloride.
