Benzalkonium Chloride is a quaternary ammonium salt and a cationic surfactant. It is not a single chemical substance, rather it is a mixture of related compounds which can be described as alkylbenzylammonium chlorides, having the nitrogen atom substituted by two methyl groups, an alkyl group of variable length (C8-C18) and a benzyl group. Benzalkonium chloride is supplied in multiple formats, including white or whitish powder, viscous liquid, and flakes. It has a characteristic odour.
