About this course
Advanced drug delivery concerns itself with the targeted and controlled delivery of advanced therapy medicinal products (medicines based on genes, cells or tissues). It also covers novel strategies and alternative routes of administration used both for conventional chemical entities and biological molecular entities (peptides and proteins) so as to optimise their pharmacokinetics and potential benefits for patients.
The advanced drug delivery field is expected to grow significantly over the next five years as therapeutic role of biopharmaceuticals and vaccines grows, buoyed by their successful deployment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Advanced drug delivery is also at the heart of the current drive toward personalised medicines. Thus, there has never been a more exciting time to begin appraising yourself of this exciting field.
This special course is designed for graduates and pharmaceutical industry professionals looking to acquire knowledge, understanding and competences in advanced drug formulation techniques. You will be taught by experts who are at the forefront of the field, some of whom are directly involved in work at leading pharmaceutical companies.
Key Learning Outcomes
- Understand the process by which new targets are identified and validated, and subsequently developed and formulated into advanced therapy medicines.
- Become acquainted with strategies used for advanced drug delivery, covering controlled release, cell-targeted delivery, tissue-targeted delivery and alternative routes of administration
- Recognise the role of physicochemical properties in the design of delivery and bioavailability of advanced therapy products.
- Appraise the clinical trial, regulatory affairs and drug licensing steps applied to the development of advanced therapy medicines.
- Appraise quality assurance issues relevant to drug products in development and manufacture, taking into consideration quality by design (QbD) approach in drug development and process of analytical technology.
- Critically evaluate the drug discovery process and develop an understanding of the fundamental principles that underpin the biopharmaceutics, formulation and drug delivery approaches for advanced therapies
